The lack of affordable housing for poor families in Moshi, Tanzania forces many households to live in overcrowded rented rooms with no electricity and water supply or self-build mud huts on illegal land.
In June 2020, Kijana Kwanza purchased a 1-acre plot close to Bonite Bottlers, about 10 minutes’ drive outside of town. The plot will comprise 20 housing units at an affordable rent and 8 private rented properties, which will generate sufficient funds for on-going repairs and maintenance.
Phase 1 of the project, costing £84,000/$109,200, will comprise of 7 housing units, with construction commencing in March 2021. We anticipate a further 7 units to be constructed every year thereafter.
We are grateful to Raha Foundation, Beta Charitable Trust, Lady Fatemah Charitable Trust and AF Dahya Family Foundation, as well as many private donors, large and small, who have funded the first phase of construction.
You can learn more about the project – including our motivations and sustainable principles, from the presentation available here.
This is a long-term project and we welcome donations and pledges to subsequent phases.
